A New Zealand Student Visa allows international students to study full-time at an approved education provider in New Zealand. It is designed for students undertaking eligible courses at universities, institutes of technology, private training establishments and other approved education providers.

To apply, students generally need an offer of place from an approved New Zealand education provider and must meet Immigration New Zealand’s requirements relating to finances, health, character and genuine study intentions.

Applicants may need to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses and onward travel. For most tertiary and other non-compulsory study, students are generally required to show NZD $20,000 per year, or NZD $1,667 per month if the course is shorter than one year, unless an acceptable sponsor or other approved financial arrangement applies.

Students are also generally required to maintain appropriate medical and travel insurance for the duration of their stay in New Zealand.

Depending on the course and visa conditions, eligible student visa holders may be permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during study periods and full-time during scheduled holidays. Students should always check the work conditions stated on their individual visa.

In some circumstances, a student’s partner or dependent children may also be eligible to apply for separate visas based on their relationship to the student. Eligibility depends on the student’s programme of study, qualification level and individual circumstances.

After completing an eligible New Zealand qualification, some graduates may also be able to apply for a Post Study Work Visa, which can provide an opportunity to gain work experience in New Zealand and potentially explore further skilled residence pathways.
