A New Zealand Visitor Visa allows eligible travellers to visit New Zealand for tourism, to see family and friends, or for other permitted short-term activities. Depending on the visa granted and individual circumstances, visitors may be able to stay in New Zealand for up to 6 or 9 months.

Applicants must be genuine visitors and show that they intend to leave New Zealand at the end of their authorised stay. They may also need to demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves during their visit. As a general guide, self-funded visitors should have at least NZD $1,000 per month, or NZD $400 per month if accommodation has already been paid for. Applicants may also need to provide evidence of a return or onward travel ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase one.

Visitor Visa applicants must meet applicable health and character requirements. Depending on the circumstances, a partner and dependent children may also be included in the application or apply for their own visitor visas.

A Visitor Visa generally allows visitors to study for up to 3 months. Visitors are not normally permitted to work for a New Zealand employer, although they may be able to work remotely for an overseas employer or client, provided they comply with their visa conditions.

People travelling primarily for business activities may need to apply for a Business Visitor Visa instead. The appropriate visa will depend on the purpose of travel, intended length of stay and individual circumstances.
